In the early 1930s, a logger had the good idea of adapting cable transport to downhill skiing. A few years later, in 1933, the first cable car specifically built for downhill skiing appeared in Rochebrune and with it, the beginning of a beautiful and long history.
The Rochebrune cable car, from yesterday to today
A symbol of elegance and avant-garde, Megève has been able to innovate through its concepts, its architecture and its infrastructures. Because it is in Megève that skiing was born. Or more exactly, on the Rochebrune massif. Indeed, it is here, on the heights of Megève, that was born in 1933 the first cable car specifically dedicated to the transport of skiers. A real revolution for the time!
The famous lift, which could accommodate up to 20 people for its first winter, transported skiers from the hamlet of Rochebrune up to 1 meters above sea level, for a vertical drop of more than 750 meters in just ten minutes and the while enjoying a magnificent view of the valley.
Keeping this tradition going over the years is a very important matter for Megève people. This is why, in December 2021, a major modernization project from the reception hall to the boarding of the cable car was established. Likewise, the mythical red cabins which were the first to take skiers to the tops of the slopes are making a comeback.
Entirely modernized, they once again color the blue sky, proudly displaying the symbol of Megève. As a nod to the past, the red cabins pay homage to the pioneers of this lift. Today, although the arrival station has developed with the departure of many ski slopes, hiking trails, mountain bike trails, a restaurant and a take-off area for paragliders, it still retains this breathtaking view of the village of Megève and the Mont Blanc massif.
