Exposition "Pierre Margara, L'intuition des Cimes" – Pierre Margara

Saturday June 13 at 15:00 a.m.

Espace d'Arts moderne et contemporain Edith Allard 247 route du Palais des Sports 74120 Megève

Megève presents a unique retrospective of the Megève sculptor Pierre Margara. The exhibition takes over the Edith Allard cultural space at the Palais over several seasons, showcasing different facets of his career for almost a year.

A sculptor of intimate matter, Pierre Margara, Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, transcends time with a timeless and pure body of work, rooted in others, dialogue, and instinct, running counter to all trends. In the international cultural landscape, Pierre is an eminently free artist with a truly singular artistic signature.

The first part of this ambitious exhibition brings together more than 80 sculptures, the majority of which were loaned by the artist's collectors, some of whom have been loyal supporters for decades. Pierre Margara evokes both the monumental, notably with his "Verticals" in linden and walnut, and the inner lives of individuals, such as a couple or a family, in Carrara marble. Using long beams from centuries-old Megève and Alpine chalets, the artist roughs out the wood, shapes it, and finally chisels faces here, bodies there, with supple and harmonious lines. He captures with precision and gentleness what unites and brings people together, deliberately erasing imperfections and turmoil.

This summer, Pierre Margara unveils the behind-the-scenes process of creating his works, particularly his bronze sculptures. Visitors are immersed in the artist's creative process through a presentation of molds of the sculptures that precede the final bronze form, based on the original work. The lost-wax casting technique, the shaping process, and the close relationship between the sculptor and the foundry are all themes explored in this second stage, which allows us to grasp not the transposition of a wooden work into bronze, but its embodiment. More technical in nature, this second presentation of partially renewed works underscores the artist's profound knowledge and love for these living and demanding materials, which allow for no deviation. Sculpting is always a risk, one that this Megève native approaches with serenity and expertise.

To conclude this Margara cycle in the fall of 2026, a selection of the sculptor's major projects will be presented, illustrating his relationship to nature, public space, and his vision of world events that shape everyone's daily life, sometimes despite ourselves. Models, drawings, and photographs sensitively explore the origins of these pivotal moments in public life, which have become defining moments in the work and life of Pierre Margara.
How could we not mention Europe, a bronze symbol, immense in the heart of Albertville, capital of the 1922 Olympic Games, the Memorial to the victims of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, a tragedy with international resonance, and the Homage to My Way, where Man takes a path guided by the hands of a piano.
